Point the stacked and even tipped hair with the points toward the eye of the hook. Here,the stacker is directly over the hook and the hair tips are aligned with the eye of the hook(red line).
If I pinch the tips here, I will have the first point of measurement of the wing length. That distance being the length of the entire hook shank from just behind the eye to the end of the bend of the hook. At first look you will think the wing is much too tall, but remember, this bug has huge wings.
