MONGOLIAN FLY PATTERNS BY KEN IWAMASA

I have found these patterns to be most effective in the highland rivers of Mongolia, where the rivers are pristine, unspoiled and the fishing is, of course, fantastic. Because of the numerous species of grasshoppers and some are the largest insects in the world, that are found along these crystal clear rivers, the dry hopper patterns are to be tied no less than 21/2 inches in length. The biggest lenok and tiamen will thrash the surface getting to the largest hoppers. The subsurface patterns such as matukas and other patterns, such as the Clouser Minnow ( not shown here) should be tied no less than 4 inches in length, heavily weighted and unweighted. For personal safety and conservation reasons all barbs should immediately be depressed when working with the large patterns.
