This is as far up the post as I would go. Holding the post while wrapping the thread will take a bit of time to master. If you have a rotating vise, turn the fly so as the post will be more or less vertical. This will help in wrapping the thread up the post. If you leave the vise in the standard horizontal position the thread will want to slip off the post and you will want to kick your dog, repeatedly....
